sspd police sealThe Siloam Springs Police Department will be recognized by the Arkansas Law Enforcement Accreditation Program at the June 20th meeting of the city’s Board of Directors. The accreditation certificate will be presented by retired Chief of Police Gary Sipes, who serves as the program’s Director. The Arkansas Law Enforcement Accreditation Program (ALEAP) was developed by the Arkansas Association of Chiefs of Police (AACP), and requires agencies prove they follow nationally recognized best practices in 188 standards related to law enforcement operations and public oversight. Siloam Springs Police is the 7th agency in the state to achieve this accreditation.

In 2015, the department’s Command Staff decided to pursue ALEAP accreditation for the department with the understanding that accreditation would require a complete revision of all department policies including a complete review of all department practices and training.  This decision was made as a commitment to the community, and demonstrates the department holds itself to nationally recognized, measurable standards and law enforcement best practices related to the delivery of police services.  Upon acceptance into the accreditation process, an agency has two years to meet accreditation standards. The assessment process is comprised of electronic submissions of proofs of training, audits, inspections and policies which are reviewed to ensure the agency meets all ALEAP standards and best practices and culminates with a final on-site inspection by an assessment team.  The on-site assessment includes evaluations and inspections of detention operations, communications, inspections of records, policies, training and personnel files, ride outs and interviews of both sworn and non-sworn employees.

In June 2016, the department submitted the initial application for acceptance in the ALEAP accreditation program.  On April 24th, 2017, the department completed its final on-site assessment and was recommended for accreditation.  The department was approved and awarded full accreditation by the ALEAP committee during its May 25th meeting in Little Rock.  Chief Jim Wilmeth credits this success to the dedication of the employees of the department. “Our employees worked diligently to ensure we met, and in many cases, exceeded the expectations of the program. Their support and keen attention to detail ensures our department will remain proficient in our duties and we will continue to positively impact the quality of life in Siloam Springs. I am very proud of them and it is an honor to serve beside these men and women.”
