Siloam Springs Fire Dpt logo copyThursday, June 29, 2017 (Siloam Springs, Ark.) Firefighters Jeff Grass and Fire Department Lieutenant Charlie Kelm won first place in the Public Health Division of the National Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) Annual Leadership Conference. Both Grass and Kelm are paramedic students at Kiamichi Technical Center in Poteau, Oklahoma and were sponsored by their school to attend the conference in Orlando, Florida.

During the conference, they developed and presented a presentation titled, “Emergency Preparedness for the Zika Virus” in the Public Health category. Grass and Kelm competed against medical students (EMTs, paramedics, nurses, doctors, etc.) from across the country.

“Siloam Springs Fire Department and all our members are incredibly proud of bothssfd grass and kelm firefighter Kelm and firefighter Grass. Attending paramedic school while holding a full-time firefighting job is challenging, and this accomplishment shows the dedication of these two men”, said Fire Chief Jeremey Criner.

Firefighter Grass and Lieutenant Kelm won the Oklahoma competition in Public Health for medical students and then were able to go to the national health convention.
